Peter Barnes | Psalm 14
SERMON NOTES
THE FOOL BEFORE GOD
(Psalm 14)
– Psalm 14 and Psalm 53 are almost identical.
1. The unbeliever is a fool.
– 14:1; people reject God for foolish reasons; one man told Martyn Lloyd-Jones that he was an atheist because his wife had to endure a painful illness. Lloyd-Jones pointed him to Ps.119:71, 67
– 14:2-3; ‘the wish is the father to the thought’
– by nature, this is all of us (Gen.6:12; Rom.3:10-12)
2. The unbeliever is hostile to God’s people.
– 14:4-6; they suppress the truth in unrighteousness (Rom.1:18)
3. The victory will belong to God’s people.
– 14:5b, 6b, 7; the atheist is a loser
– Augustine: ‘Let the strong and mighty laugh at men like me: let us, the weak and the poor, confess our sins to you.’
– Rev.7:9-10; Prov.3:7-8
