SERMON NOTES
OLDER WOMEN TEACHING YOUNGER WOMEN
(Titus 2:3-5)
Titus was in Crete where the snake goddess was worshipped, and where ‘to play the Cretan’ meant ‘to lie’.
1. Older women are to be reverent in their behaviour.
– 2:3 – almost priestesses
– no slandering (see 1 Tim.5:13); no overdoing the wine; see Prov.31:26; 23:29-35
2. Older women are to teach younger women about home-making.
– 2:3c-5a; seven things are listed.
(a) to love their husbands. Thomas Taylor says that love is first because it draws everything else after it.
(b) to love their children. A few words of advice, encouragement, and spiritual focus can make all the difference.
(c) to be self-controlled. We lose so much because we lose self-control. Usually we have to be trained or to train ourselves to have it.
(d) to be pure. The NKJV has ‘chaste’. There must be a decided turning away from anything that is sexually impure.
(e) to be workers at home. Read Elisabeth Elliot and Edith Schaeffer.
(f) to be kind. Younger women are to be kind as God is kind.
(g) to be subject to their husbands. Equality and sameness are not the same.
3. In this way Christianity will not be reviled.
– 2:5b; Ezek.36:19-22
