Peter Barnes | Romans 11:33-36
SERMON NOTES
THE WONDER OF GOD’S WAYS
(Romans 11:33-36)
– doctrine leads to ethics (12:1), but also praise (11:33-36). Paul probably has Romans 9-11 particularly in mind rather than Romans 1-11.
1. God is far beyond us.
– 11:33; riches (or grace, like Eph.3:8), wisdom, knowledge (see Col.2:3), judgments and ways.
– 11:34 (Isa.40:13); see Ps.36:6
– Great God of wonders! All Thy ways/ Are matchless, godlike, and divine;/ But the fair glories of Thy grace,/ More godlike and unrivalled shine (Samuel Davies)
2. God owes us nothing.
– 11:35 (Job 41:11); note Rom.11:6
– Ps.49:7-9; 50:7-15; Micah 6:6-8
3. All things are from Him, through Him, and to Him.
– 11:36; God is the source, the means, and the goal; Paul is probably not referring specifically to the Trinity as the Spirit is not the goal.
– Rom.16:27; Eph.3:20-21; 1 Tim.1:17
