Peter Barnes | Romans 11:7-10
SERMON NOTES
THE DARKNESS OF THE REPROBATE
(Romans 11:7-10)
– no wonder Paul wrote Rom.11:33-36!
1. Seeking righteousness by works leads to failure.
– 11:7a; see Rom.9:31-32; 10:3
– same for any man-devised religion e.g. see John 4:19-22 for the Samaritans
2. Only the elect are saved.
– 11:7b; no remnant in Sodom and Gomorrah (Rom.9:29)
3. The reprobate are hardened.
– 11:7c-10; citing Isa.29:10; Deut.29:4; Ps.69:22-23
– reprobate are blinded or hardened, asleep, trapped, deaf ensnared, burdened, and ignorant
– reprobation does not take place apart from sin
– this is not Paul’s last word on Israel (see 11:11)
– but the gospel conceals as well as reveals (see Matt.13:13; John 12:40); the teaching on reprobation must be behind Matt.7:6.
– Thank God for His electing grace!
