Peter Barnes | Romans 10:21
SERMON NOTES
GOD’S DESIRE FOR OUR SALVATION
(Romans 10:21)
– Paul cites Isa.65:2. How does it fit in with election?
1. God both loves and hates the non-elect.
– Lloyd-Jones and Augustine both say love the sinner, hate the sin. That is not entirely wrong but see Ps.5:5; 7:11; 11:5
– see the double side in Eph.2:3-4; God shows hot displeasure against the believer in Ps.6:1; 30:4-5; 38:1; death is because of God’s anger against sin (Ps.90:7).
2. God offers the gospel to all with sincerity and affection.
– it may not be saving but it is affectionate e.g. John 3:16; 2 Pet.3:9; Matt.23:37; Mark 10:21
– God has no pleasure in the death of the wicked (Ezek.18:23, 32; 33:11; but note Deut.28:63)
– God has done all (Isa.5:4; Jer.7:13; 11:7); compare Matt.22:3 and Matt.22:14
– God feels a certain tension within Himself in Lam.3:33; Hos.11:8-9; Deut.5:29; 32:29; Ps.81:13-14; Isa.48:18
3. Our unbelief is our fault.
– 10:21; John 3:20-21
– Richard Sibbes: ‘The office of a minister is to be a wooer’.
