SERMON NOTES
CHRIST AS THE END OF THE LAW
(Romans 10:3b-4)
– Israel fails to see her divine crucified Messiah (9:32b-33); she possesses zeal without knowledge (10:2); and she misses the righteousness of God in Christ (10:3). The righteousness of God revealed in Ex.33:20 drives us to that which is received in Romans 1:16-17.
1. Jews sought their own righteousness.
– 10:3b; note e.g. Luke 18:9; Matt.9:12-13
– Augustus Toplady: Foul, I to the Fountain fly;/ Wash me, Saviour, or I die!’
2. The Jews did not submit to God’s righteousness.
– 10:3c; Thomas Aquinas came to see all his works as like straw.
– fleeing our righteousness and to Christ’s righteousness go together
3. Christ is the end of the law to believers.
– 10:4; it could mean the goal of the law or the termination of the law.
– Douglas Moo says both are true in different senses – see 2 Cor.3:7-11 and 1 Cor.9:19-21; Gal.6:2
– Heidelberg Catechism no. 61; see Gal.4:4-5
