Peter Barnes | 2 Kings 20:12-21
SERMON NOTES
FOOLISH PRIDE
2 Kings 20:12-21; Luke 18:9-27
– Hezekiah shows a lack of discernment
1. The folly of pride.
– 20:1-13; Hezekiah falls for this; the man who walks with God (see 18:3-7) is naïve here (20:14-15)
– Spurgeon kept his head with Jer.45; the biblical principle is Psalm 138:6
2. The evil of God’s enemies.
– 20:16-18; the Babylonian visitors liked what they saw!
– the destruction of Jerusalem in 587 B.C. is not all Hezekiah’s fault, but sin seems to have a kind of butterfly effect.
3. The selfishness of thinking short-term.
– 20:19; Calvin and Dale Ralph Davis try to read it as gratitude as in Job 1:20-22
– but it reads like he is, initially at least, concerned for the short-term only
– 1 Peter 5:5b-6
