Peter Barnes | Romans 9:25-29
SERMON NOTES
A REMNANT ELECT OR A DEGRADED REPROBATE?
(Romans 9:25-29)
– five verses which are all quotations from the Old Testament
1. God calls the Gentiles as part of restored Israel.
– 9:25-26; citing Hosea 2:23 and 1:10
– restored Israel is the church (cf. Heb.8:8; 1 Peter 2:9-10)
– this is not Plan B, but God’s intention from the first
2. True Israel is remnant Israel.
– 9:27-28; citing Isa. 10:22-23
– as in Elijah’s day in 1 Kings 19:14, 18
– of the seven billion people in the world, 2.2 billion are counted as Christians. Are 2.2 billion born again?
19:28 was fulfilled when the Roman armies destroyed Jerusalem in A.D. 70
3. Without election there would be utter degradation and judgment.
– 9:29; from Isa.1:9; see Eph.2:1-3
– Matthew Henry: ‘Grace does not run in the blood, but corruption does.’
– Yehiel Dinur on Adolf Eichmann: ‘I am … exactly like he.’
