SERMON NOTES
WHO SHALL SEPARATE US FROM THE LOVE OF CHRIST?
(Romans 8:35-39)
– Martyn Lloyd-Jones; ‘nothing greater or more wonderful in the whole of Scripture’.
1. No earthly trials can separate the Christian from Christ.
– 8:35-36; the ‘us’ are those of 8:29-30; lists seven things to do with trials and tribulations (note 2 Cor.1:5)
– the Christian is a ‘hyper-conqueror’
– On 13 September 1950 Pastor Son was arrested by Communist North Koreans and shot. He wrote: ‘All things for me are from the love of God. My tears, My suffering, My life, My death …’
Calvin: ‘our faith should be borne up on wings by the promises of God’.
2. No spiritual powers can separate the Christian from Christ.
– 8:38-39; covers every possibility, like Gal.1:8
– William Cowper has the Lord speak: ‘Mine is an unchanging love,/ Higher than the heights above,/ Deeper than the depths beneath,/ Free and faithful, strong as death.’
3. The perseverance and assurance of the Christian.
– love of God = love of Christ (see John 10:28-30)
– 2 Tim.1:12
