Peter Barnes | Romans 8:31-34
SERMON NOTES
IF GOD IS FOR US, WHO CAN BE AGAINST US?
(Romans 8:31-34)
– Matthew Henry: ‘If ever Paul rode in a triumphant chariot on this side of heaven, here it is.’
1. God is restricted by no one.
– 8:31; note Ps.27:1; recall Dan.4:35; Hezekiah in 2 Chron. 32:7-8
2. The God who has given us His Son will surely give us all things.
– 8:32; Thomas Schreiner says the ‘all things’ include the all things of verses 28 and 37, but the context favours all good things.
– Octavius Winslow: ‘Who delivered up Jesus to die? Not Judas, for money; not Pilate, for fear; not the Jews, for envy – but the Father, for love!’
– God spared Isaac but not His own Son (Gen.22:12, 16)
– Ps.84:11; 2 Sam.12:7-8; 1 Cor.3:21-23; same sort of argument in Rom.5:9-10
3. God justifies His elect so no one can condemn them.
– 8:33-34; Satan is the accuser of the brethren (Rev.12:10)
– Augustus Toplady: If Thou hast my discharge procured,/ And freely in my room endured/ The whole of wrath divine;/ Payment God cannot twice demand -/ First at my bleeding Surety’s hand,/ And then again at mine.
