Peter Barnes | Acts 17:30-34
SERMON NOTES
RESURRECTION, JUDGMENT, RESPONSE
Psalm 96:1-9; Acts 17:16-34
– applies the sermon in Acts 17:30-34
1. In the light of God’s judgment, we all need to repent.
– 17:30-31; God does not treat the times of ignorance as they deserve (see Rom.3:25)
– but to repent is the only response now (Luke 3:7-9; Acts 2:38; 3:19; 1 Thess.1:9-10)
– this judgment will be universal, righteous, and definite – hence Rom.3:19
2. The great proof of this is that one man has already risen from the dead.
– 17:31; see Ps.96:13; 98:9, then Dan.7:13; Matt.25:31-33; John 5:27
– Acts 10:41-42
3. We need to respond to the risen one.
– 17:32-34; some mocked or sneered (same word as in Acts 2:13; Pliny the Elder thought that resurrection of the body was a mad idea; some wanted to investigate further; and some came to faith in Jesus the risen one.
