Peter Barnes | Romans 8:30
SERMON NOTES
FIVE LINKS IN THE CHAIN OF SALVATION, part 2
(Romans 8:30)
– verses 29-30 flow from verse 28; Paul says much the same thing in 2 Thess.2:13-14
1. God calls His people.
– a general calling to all and sundry in Acts 17:30; Matt.22:14; this can be resisted (Acts 7:51)
– an effectual calling in Acts 13:48; 16:14; this is irresistible
2. God justifies His people.
– do not ask if you have been predestined, ask whether you have faith in Christ – see Rom. 3:22, 27-28
– Luther: ‘Justification takes place when, in the just judgment of God, our sins, and the eternal punishment due to them, are remitted, and when clothed with the righteousness of Christ, which is freely imputed to us, and reconciled to God, we are made His beloved children, and heirs of eternal life.’
3. God glorifies His people.
– Normally, glory is future (e.g. Rom.8:17-18), but Paul uses the aorist (past) tense in verse 30
– this shows its certainty, like Jesus in John 17:4
– see John 6:37-39
