GOD AND HUMAN BEINGS (Acts 17:26-29)
Psalm 8:1-9; Acts 17:16-34
– In verses 22-25 Paul spoke mainly of the nature of God; in verses 26-29 he deals mainly with us as human beings.
1. We all go back to Adam.
– 17:26; from ‘one blood’ (NKJV) or ‘one man’ (NIV, ESV)
– Deut.32:8; Ps.74:17
– there is one race – the human race. William Wilberforce used Col.3:11-12 and Acts 17:26 in the campaign against slavery.
– in April 2005 twin girls were born in Nottingham – one black and the other white.
– God is near (17:27; Jer.23:23-24)
2. All truth is God’s truth.
– 17:28; cites two pagans (Epimenides and Aratus); see Tit.1:12 for Epimenides again, and 1 Cor.15:33 for Menander.
– pagans have some distorted idea of God which can be used
3. To know God truly is to know ourselves truly.
– 17:29; leads to a riot in Acts 19:23-28.
