Peter Barnes | Acts 13:42-52
SERMON NOTES
RESPONSES TO THE GOSPEL
Acts 13:13-25, 26-52
– Paul preaches here to a synagogue of Jews and God-fearers
1. Many Jews rejected the gospel.
– some interest in 13:42-43
– trouble starts in 13:45; they reviled or blasphemed what Paul said, despite the evidence of Ps.2; Isa.55; and Ps.16; more hostility in 13:49-50
– God’s pattern is always to the Jew first, then the Gentile (13:46; Rom.1:16; 11:11)
2. Many Gentiles received the gospel.
– 13:47, fulfilling Is.49:6
– 13:48 – from the human angle, they rejoiced and glorified the word of the Lord (note John Wesley on 24 May 1738); from the divine side, they were elected.
3. The disciples knew joy and boldness in the gospel.
– 13:46 – boldness.
– 13:51 – assurance in the message
13:52 – joy in the Holy Spirit
