Peter Barnes | Acts 13:26-41
SERMON NOTES
THE OLD TESTAMENT TESTIFIES OF HIM
Acts 13:13-25, 26-43
– Paul preaches here to a synagogue of Jews and God-fearers (Gentiles who worshipped the God of Israel, but the men were not circumcised).
1. The Old Testament prophesies the death and resurrection of the Messiah.
– First, the death (13:27-29); he mentions no Old Testament passages but Isa.53:3 & Ps.118:22 could be in mind.
– Second, the resurrection (13:33-37), from three Old Testament verses (Ps.2:7; Isa.55:3; Ps.16:10)
2. Eyewitnesses testify to His resurrection.
– 13:30-33a; Stephen Hawking says the afterlife is ‘a fairy story for people afraid of the dark’.
– The resurrection is true, and seen by hundreds of eyewitnesses.
3. God’s offer and God’s warning.
– 13:38-41; the Old Testament moral law broke us, and the Old Testament sacrificial law could not save us.
– Paul applies this truth with respect, affection and deep seriousness.
