SERMON NOTES
THE SABBATH (Lev.23:1-3)
Leviticus 23:1-8; Hebrews 4:1-10
– Lev.23 lists the weekly Sabbath plus seven annual feasts. We are looking to see Christ in them (Col.2:16-17)
1. There was to be no work on the Sabbath.
– Ex.16:22-36
– no extreme or silly views (e.g. Luke 13:10-16; 14:1-5)
– double sacrifices on the Sabbath (Num.28:9-10)
2. The Sabbath was a sign of creation and redemption.
– creation in Ex.20:8-11; redemption in Deut.5:12-15
3. Christ is the Christian Sabbath.
– Sabbath is now the Lord’s Day (1 Cor.16:1-2; Rev.1:10)
– new creation in 2 Cor.5:17
– ‘Sabbath rest’ in Christ in Matt.11:28-30
– Heb.4:3, 9-10
– ‘You have made us for Yourself, and our hearts are restless till they find their rest in You’ (Augustine).
