SERMON NOTES
THE COVENANT WITH DAVID
2 Samuel 7:1-17; Luke 1:26-38
– 2 Samuel 7:12-16 does not use the word ‘covenant’ but it is there in Psalm 89:3-4. David wanted to build a house for God, but God will build a house for David (Eph.3:20-21).
1. The covenant with David is fulfilled in two ways: in his sons and his Son and Lord.
– 7:12-16; Ps.89:27-33
(a) it applies to David’s sons e.g. 1 Chron.28:6-7. Yet it all runs aground in 587 B.C. when the kingship falls (2 Kings 25).
(b) it applies to David’s Son and Lord e.g. Hebrews 1:5; Matt.22:41-46.
2. Death will not defeat this covenant promise.
– 7:12-13, 16; Jer.33:14-18; Luke 1:32-33
3. Sin will not defeat this covenant promise.
– 7:14-15; it is not ‘if he sins’ but ‘when’
– only the Son of David is sinless (1 Pet.2:22)
– hence the cry for mercy to the Son of David in Matthew 20:29-34
