The Unfolding of the Covenants – The Covenant of Works

Peter Barnes | Genesis 2:4-17

SERMON  NOTES
THE  COVENANT  OF  WORKS
Genesis 2:4-17;  Genesis 3:1-21

– covenants  with  Noah  (Gen.6:18),  Abraham  (Gen.15:18),  Israel  (Ex.24:8),  and  David  (Ps.89:3),  as  well  as  a  new  covenant  (Jer.31:31;  Luke 22:20).

– covenants  do  not  save  (e.g.  Amos 3:2),  but  they  reveal  great  privileges  (Rom.9:4-5).

1. God  put  Adam  on  probation.

– Gen.2:16-17;  he  sinned  and  he  died  (Gen.5:5)

2. Adam  failed.

– Gen.3:6;  basic  sin  is  disobedience

– Israel,  like  Adam,  fails  (Hosea 6:7)

– 1 Cor.15:22

3. God  promises  victory  through  a  son  of  the  woman.

– Gen. 3:14-15, 21.

– Heb.4:13;  Gal.3:10, 12

– the  covenant  of  works  reveals  where  we  are  before  God  (Mark 2:17);  but  a  second  Adam  has  come  (Rom.5:18-19).
