SERMON NOTES
THE SIN OF CONSULTING THE DEAD
1 Samuel 28:3-25; Acts 16:16-34
– the occult has made a return in the West; see Isa.8:19-20
1. Saul’s spiritual disintegration.
– 28:3; Saul knew better than his actions indicate; see Lev.19:31; Deut.18:9-11
– Saul swears by the God whose Word he breaks (28:10)
– fear (28:4-5) and rejection of God has led to rejection by God (28:6-7)
– Heb.10:26-27
2. God’s last message to Saul.
– 28:11-18 – a demon? a trick? an apparition? Samuel himself? Ultimately, it comes from God (see 28:19-20)
– 1 Cor.8:4 & 10:20 fit together; do not play with the occult
3. Beware of the kindness of the wicked.
– 28:21-25; this sounds strange but the witch does show some kindness to Saul; see too Acts 28:1-6.
– two ways: Prov.14:12 or John 14:6
