Peter Barnes | Romans 5:9-11
SERMON NOTES
IF BLESSINGS THROUGH HIS DEATH, HOW MUCH MORE THROUGH HIS LIFE?
(Romans 5:9-11)
– Christ did not only come to acquit us from our guilt.
1. Salvation is more than simply justification.
– 5:9; Paul looks to the judgment (1 Thess.5:9)
– those for whom Christ died must be saved from the wrath i.e. since everyone is not saved, Christ did not die for everyone.
2. The living Christ continues to work for His people.
– 5:10; faith embraces Christ as priest who is sacrificed, but also as prophet who speaks and king who rules.
– John 3:18, 36; Rom.8:32, 34
– He will raise the dead. He intercedes for sinners. He preserves and keeps them (Jude 24). If Christ died for His enemies, what will He do for them when they have become His friends?
3. Rejoice in God.
– 5:11; see 5:3
– Acts 3:8 (rejoices), but note that it is the risen Christ who works this miracle, not Peter (Acts 3:12-16)
– Charles Hodge: ‘Salvation is begun on earth.’
