SERMON NOTES
SAUL AS GOD’S ANOINTED
1 Samuel 10:1-27; Acts 8:9-25
– 10:1 – Saul was ‘Messiahed’!
1. The Spirit’s work in the Old Testament.
– 10:2-7 – three signs, with the third one described in some detail in 10:8-13
– the Spirit mentioned twice, also in Judges 3:10; 6:34; 11:29; 13:25
– but note 1 Samuel 16:14-15; Heb.6:4-6; compare with Psalm 51:10-11
– the Spirit can empower people for a time without giving them new life
2. A sinning people and a timid king.
– 10:7 sounds good, but note 10:17-19; see Psalm 106:15
– 10:21-22 is an anti-climax!
3. Glimmers of blessing.
– 10:26-27; divisions and hints of future trouble
– but Saul holds his peace, wisely; there are glimmers of blessing in the ambiguities of life
