Peter Barnes | Psalm 11
SERMON NOTES
WHAT IF THE FOUNDATIONS ARE DESTROYED?
(Psalm 11)
– 11:1a – David is firm in a time of crisis, perhaps while Saul is threatening him
1. The temptation to spiritual despair.
– 11:1b-3; there is a time to flee (e.g. Matt.24:16-18) but this is not it
– it is a state of moral dissolution, much like today in the West
2. God still reigns.
– 11:4; Habakkuk 2:20; the temple means heaven
3. God will judge.
– 11:5-7; for verse 6 see Gen.19:24
Pardon our sinfulness, God of all pity,
Call to remembrance Thy mercies of old;
Strengthen Thy Church to abide as a city
Set on a hill for a light to Thy fold.
Head of the Church on earth, risen, ascended!
Thine is the honour that dwells in this place:
As Thou hast blessed us through years that have ended,
Still lift upon us the light of Thy face.
