Peter Barnes | Psalm 4
SERMON NOTES
EVENING PRAYER IN A DAY OF TROUBLE
(Psalm 4)
– seems to be written at the end of a troubled day (4:4, 8), perhaps during Absalom’s revolt (as in Psalm 3)
1. Turn to the Lord in prayer.
– 4:1; NIV only has a plea here, but the NKJV and ESV read past mercies as the ground for present favour
– 4:6b
2. Trust in His electing grace.
– 4:2-3; this is the believer’s comfort (2 Tim.2:19)
– George Whitefield said that this gave him assurance and comfort.
3. Do what is right and rejoice in all circumstances.
– 4:4-5; he may be speaking to despondent friends
– 4:7; not unlike Habakkuk 3:17-18
4. Rest in His peace.
– 4:8; see too Psalm 3:5; Luther wanted Psalm 4:8 read to him as he was dying.
– what do you do in a day of distress and trouble?
