SERMON NOTES
A CHILDLESS WOMAN
1 Samuel 1:1-20; Luke 1:5-25
– about 1100 B.C., in the time of Judges 21:25. Samuel is priest, prophet, and the last of the judges.
1. God is at work even in dark days.
– 1:1-2; polygamy is wrong (Gen.2:24)
– the clergy are corrupt (1:3; 2:12-17, 22); family life dysfunctional (1:4-7; same in Gen.16:1-6; 30:1-2)
– Elkanah tries to be some sort of comfort in verse 8
2. We ought to pray earnestly.
– 1:9-18; Ps.55:22; ‘Take it to the Lord in prayer’
– she bargains with God (1:11), somewhat like the Nazirite vow (Num.6; Judges 13).
3. God blesses a barren woman.
– 1:19-20; God is compassionate (Ex.2:23-24; 6:5)
– Ps.113:9
– Samuel means ‘heard of God’ or perhaps ‘Name of God’
