SERMON NOTES
RESULTS OF JUSTIFICATION BY FAITH
(Romans 3:27-31)
– verse 27 begins with a ‘then’ or ‘accordingly’.
1. We have no ground for boasting.
– 3:27-28; Luke 18:9; Eph.8-9
– Calvin: ‘faith receives all from God, and brings nothing except a humble confession of want.’
– 1 Cor.1:30-31; 4:7
2. One God means one way of salvation.
– 3:29-30; Old Testament saints are saved by Christ (Heb.9:15; 11:1-2)
– Gal.3:28; beware of failing to see the implications of grace as in Galatians 2:11-14
– the Aryan Paragraph in Nazi Germany was an attack on the gospel
3. The law is established, not abolished.
– 3:31; because the law does not justify does not mean it can be disregarded.
– Martin Luther: ‘It is not from works that we are set free by faith in Christ, but from the belief in works, that is, from foolishly presuming to seek justification through works.’
