Peter Barnes | Hosea 11:12-12:14
SERMON NOTES
JUDAH NO BETTER
Hosea 11:12-12:14; Revelation 2:1-7
– 11:12 may say Judah is unlike Israel (NKJV, ESV) or like Israel (NIV). The latter seems more likely in the light of 12:2.
1. We ought to learn from our history.
– 12:1-2; nobody pursues the scorching east wind (see Jonah 4:8)
– Hosea reminds Judah where he came from (see Gen.25:22-26; 28:11-13, 16-21; 32:24-26, 30; 35:1, 6-7, 15).
– Bethel, where God had made Himself known, is now where idolatry and wickedness reign (4:15; 5:8; 10:15)
– 12:6
2. Beware especially of pride.
– 12:7-9; sins and then boasts about it
– Lev.19:36; back in the tents in Lev.23:42-44; remember 1 Tim.6:7
3. Take heed to God’s Word.
– 12:10-14; As an evangelist, D. L. Moody used to warn smart alecks when they mocked God’s Word: ‘Now you jeer at the Word of God. I would as soon play with forked lightning!’
