GOD’S HEART DIVIDED
Hosea 11:1-11; Luke 19:41-48
– God wears His heart on His sleeve, as it were.
1. God has treated Israel like a son.
– 11:1-4; see Ex.4:22-23; God had done everything for His son, but Israel had gone its own way (Ex.32; Num.25; 1 Kgs 12).
– Israel is the son who failed; Christ the Son who always pleased His Father (Matt.2:14-15) – both sons were in Egypt
2. Sin not repented of leads to judgment.
– 11:5-7; the Assyrians will devastate Israel
3. God feels the tension between His justice and His mercy.
– 11:8-9; Admah and Zeboiim were with Sodom and Gomorrah (Deut.29:23)
– God is not ‘the unmoved mover’ of Aristotle; McCheyne to Andrew Bonar: ‘Were you able to preach on hell with tenderness?’ It goes hand-in-hand with the doctrine of predestination; Luke 13:34; 19:41-44; Phil.3:18; Luke 15:10
4. God promises to restore His people.
– 11:10-11; He does not roar in judgment but shouts to call us to repentance
