Peter Barnes | Hosea 10:1-15
SERMON NOTES
ISRAEL’S HEART DIVIDED
Hosea 10:1-15; Revelation 6:1-17
– two images: of a vine (10:1) and a heifer (10:11); the general idea is that we reap what we sow (10:13; Gal.6:7)
1. God wants our hearts.
– 10:1-2; Israel’s heart is divided (NKJV), deceitful (NIV), false (ESV)
– it is not sincere – see 1 Kings 18:21; 2 Kings 17:32-33
– Matt.6:24; Acts 5:1-11; Samuel Ward: ‘The whole of our duty as men is to give ourselves wholly to Christ’.
2. The folly of apostasy and rebellion.
(a) worship of false gods (10:1-2, 5-6)
(b) the breakdown of law (10:4)
(c) their trust in themselves (10:13)
3. We reap what we sow.
– 10:1, 7-8 – the vine became a twig that would be swept away
– 10:14-15; Shalmaneser V ruled Assyria from 727 B.C. to 722 B.C.; see Luke 23:26-30; Rev.6:16
