SOWING  THE  WIND,  REAPING  THE  WHIRLWIND
Hosea  8:1-14;  Galatians 6:1-10

– we  experienced  a  cyclone  in  Vanuatu  in  late  1982

1. Israel’s  disobedience  to  God’s  law.

– 8:1b, 3a, 12;  this  is  the  basic  attitude

(a)  they  chose  their  own  kings  (8:4);  see  1 Kings 12:19, 28

(b)  they  turned  to  idols  (8:4-6),  notably  the  calves  at  Bethel  and  Dan

(c)  they  turned  to  foreign  alliances  (8:7-10);  Churchill  on  cooperation  with  the  USSR:  ‘if  you  are  going  to  sup  with  the  devil,  better  use  a  long  spoon’.

– Moses  had  warned  Israel  in  Deut.4:23;  6:10-12;  8:10-14,  19-20

2. Israel’s  religious  pretences.

– 8:2, 11, 13;  religious  activities  without  biblical  faith

– Rom.1:21-23

3. If  we  sow  the  wind,  we  will  reap  the  whirlwind.

– 8:7;  Gal.6:7-8;  see   Hos.8:5,  13, 14.
