Peter Barnes | Hosea 7:1-16
SERMON NOTES
A LESSON NOT LEARNT
Hosea 7:1-16; 2 Corinthians 4:1-6
– not unlike Matt.23:37
1. God is more ready to heal and restore than we are to repent.
– 6:11b-7:2; Israel is complacent (see Psalm 10:4, 6, 11)
– 2 Cor.5:10 is behind the gospel; John 3:20 is behind our rejection of it.
2. Sin always inflames.
– 7:3-7; the age of assassinations (2 Kings 15:8-10, 13-14, 23-25, 29-30)
– civil authority is meant to restrain evil (1 Peter 2:14); need for self-control (Gal.5:23)
3. Pride leads to folly.
– 7:8-16; Israel described as a half-baked cake (v.8), a deluded old man (v.9), a silly dove (vv.11-12), a faulty bow (v.16)
– Israel has learnt nothing (7:10, 13, 15); she is complacent and proud (contrast to Ps.25:9)
– the result is like a return to bondage in Egypt (7:16)
