SERMON NOTES
A FALSE REPENTANCE
Hosea 6:1-11; 2 Corinthians 7:2-12
– like Mark 15:19
– Derek Kidner says that in Hosea 6:1-3 Hosea is speaking, and that 6:4-6 shows that Israel rejected what he said. But verses 1-3 seem to come from Israel and verses 4-6 show that the repentance was only shallow.
1. Repentance is more than fine words.
– 6:1-3; note 2 Cor.7:10-11
– also Jer.14:1-10; Ps.78:34-39; none of Catherine the Great’s ‘The good Lord will pardon; that’s his job.’ It is not!
2. God rejects a false repentance.
– 6:4-6; see Matt.13:20-22
– Hosea 6:6 cited in Matt.9:13; 12:7
3. True repentance leads to change.
– 6:7-11; verse 7 refers not to the town Adam (Josh.3:16) but the man Adam
– Acts 26:17-20
