Peter Barnes | 2 John 7-9
SERMON NOTES
PROGRESSIVE ANTICHRISTS
(2 John 7-9)
– Robert Yarbrough calls verses 7-8 ‘the core of the epistle’; see 1 Cor.12:10; 1 John 4:1
1. There are many deceivers about Christ.
– v.7; Matt.7:21-23
– the coming one (John 11:27); to save He had to come in the flesh, in order to die (Heb.2:14-18)
2. We are warned about losing our full reward.
– v.8; NKJV has ‘we’ (see Gal.4:11; Phil.2:16); the ESV has ‘you’ and ‘we’; NIV has ‘you’ all the way through
– William Bridge: ‘Keep the truth and the truth will keep you.’
– Mark 13:5, 22-23; Phil.1:9
– reward in Heb.11:26
3. Beware of innovators and progressives.
– v.9; 1 Cor.4:6-7; we are like the Athenians in Acts 17:21
– to go ahead of Christ is to lose Him, and lose God (cf. 1 John 2:23-24; 1 Tim.2:5; Acts 4:12; John 14:9; Col.2:9)
