Jude: Pockets of Gold: The Short Books of the New Testament – Proud Spiritless Grumblers

Peter Barnes | Jude 16-19

SERMON NOTES
PROUD  SPIRITLESS  GRUMBLERS
(Jude  16-19)

– grace  is  being  turned  into  immorality  (vv.3-4)

1. People  of  grace  are  gracious.

– v.16;  these  false  teachers  are  grumblers  and  faultfinders  (malcontents,  complainers),  like  Israel  in  the  desert  (Ex.15:24;  17:3;  Num.14:26-29;  Ps.106:24-25)

– see  Luke 15:28-32;  Phil.2:14

– Joni  Eareckson:  ‘God  of  all  comfort,  keep  me  from  complaining  if  my  burden  seems  heavy.’

– they  do  what  they  want  (contrary  to  Gal.5:24)  and  boast  (Luke 18:9)

2. We  are  warned  against  ungodly  scoffers.

– vv.17-18;  from  2 Peter 3:3  but  see  also  Acts 20:29-30;  2 Tim.3:1-5;  4:3;

– like  Bishop  Spong’s  attack  on  the  African  bishops  in  1999  as  ‘superstitious’  and  ‘uneducated’.

3. The  ungodly  do  not  have  the  Spirit  of  God.

– v.19;  without  the  Spirit,  we  are  not  Christians  (John 14:16-17;  Rom.8:9)

– Matt.7:15-20
