PRAYER, FAITH AND LOVE
(Philemon 1-7)
– R. Kent Hughes: ‘The letter to Philemon was the most brilliantly nuanced, compelling letter of reconciliation in ancient history.’
1. Thankfulness in prayer.
– vv.1-4; not just intercession, although we still need to intercede for others in prayer
– we ought to thank God for the Christians in our lives
2. An active faith.
– v.5; like Eph.1:15; faith in Jesus as Lord (e.g. Acts 17:7)
– we are to share this with others (v.6).
3. A practical love.
– vv.5, 7.
– when John Newton was converted, he took some time to work out its implications regarding slavery.
