Judges: The Dark Ages of the Old Testament – When I am Strong, Then I am Weak

Peter Barnes | Judges 14

SERMON  NOTES
WHEN  I  AM  STRONG,  THEN  I  AM  WEAK
(Judges   14)

– reverse  of  2 Cor.12:10

1.  God’s  overruling  for  good  does  not  take  away  our  responsibility  for  sin.

– 14:1-4;  Andrew  Fausset  and  Leon  Wood  both  say  that  Samson  understood,  but  that  seems  unlikely

– Samson  acts  contrary  to  Deut.7:1-4

– Gen.50:20;  Acts 15:36-41

2.  God  remains  sovereign  over  our  evil.

– 14:5-20;  Samson  exhibits  little  self-discipline  (Prov.16:32);  William  Wilberforce  called  it  ‘vivacity’  in  his  own  early  life.

– Spirit  in  verses  6  and  19

3.  Recognising  a  failure  is  not  the  same  as  growing  in  grace.

– 14:18;  repeated  with  Delilah  in  chapter  16

– this  is  not  the  same  as  repentance.
