Peter Barnes | Judges 10:6-18
SERMON NOTES
GOD REBUKES HIS PEOPLE
(Judges 10:6-18)
– something like 2:6-3:6 in explaining the cycles
1. Sin tends to spiral downwards.
– 10:6; like 3:12; 4:1; 6:1, only worse
– more than a drift (Heb.2:1)
2. Remorse is not the same as repentance.
– 10:10; God can be kind even to those without true repentance e.g. Ahab in 1 Kings 21:27-29
– God tests the Israelites in 10:11-14; like Josh. 24 and Matt. 15:21-28; Israel seems to respond better in 9:15-16a
– Samuel Rutherford: ‘It is but Christ’s outside that is unkind.’
– Psalm 139:23-24 is a good test.
3. Our hope lies in God’s kindness.
– 10:16b; see Ex.2:23-25; Isa.63:9
– Hos.14:1-3 – He gives us the words to say! Rom.5:6, 8
