Peter Barnes | Judges 7
SERMON NOTES
THE WEAK CONFOUND THE STRONG
(Judges 7)
– like David and Goliath; the key text is 7:2b.
1. God uses the weak to confound the strong.
– 7:1-2; note Deut.8:11-17
– originally 32,000 versus 135,000 (7:12; 8:10)
– 7:3 (see Deut.20:8); 7:4-8 looks like simply a way of reducing the numbers to 300 versus 135,000
– 1 Cor.1:28-29; 2 Cor.4:7; Eph.2:8-9
– Cambuslang revival of 1741 was led by two ordinary men (James Robe and William McCulloch)
– Joni Eareckon Tada: ‘the weaker we are, the harder we must lean on God.’
2. God is kind to His weak people.
– 7:9-15; note 6:27
3. We act but the victory is God’s.
– 7:16-25; victories are not usually won with torches, jars and trumpets; it is God’s victory (7:22; cf. 1 Kings 21:19-23; 22:29-35 for Ahab); 2 Cor. 12:9-10
