SERMON NOTES
GIDEON: WEAKNESSES AND STRENGTHS
(Judges 6:25-40)
– ‘Each victory will help you some other to win’ – but it is not mechanical. This is in the ‘rescue’ stage of the cycle.
1. Obedience despite weakness.
– 6:25-27; obedience is compulsory, but heroism looks optional!
– John 3:1-2; a contrast to Boniface in 724-5 who cut down the oak sacred to Thor at Geismar
2. The folly of idolatry.
– 6:31 – a choice between Baal and Gideon; sin makes us silly, like Jonah trying to escape God (Jonah 1:1-3)
– Joash comes to his senses (Luke 15:17)
3. Our dependence on the Spirit.
– 6:33-35; the Spirit is found 97 times in the Old Testament; see John 14:17
4. Weak faith seeks signs.
– 6:36-40; Gideon knew it in verse 39
– 1 Cor.1:22-23; but note Psalm 103:14
