Peter Barnes | Judges 1:1-2:10
SERMON NOTES
LOST IN ONE GENERATION
(Judges 1:1-2:10)
Judges covers about 340 years up until about 1050 B.C. It was a loose time (Judges 21:25), but note Hebrews 11:32.
1. Leadership is given to Judah.
– 1:1-2; there are victories to the southern tribes in 1:1-18
– the Messiah will come from Judah
2. Beware of half-victories.
– 1:19; the real cause is not the iron chariots (see 5:20-21); note Deut.20:1. Israel lacked the will to win.
– 1:22-26 echoes Joshua 2 & 6, but Bethel was already claimed for God (Gen.28:19; 35:6-7; 48:3). The man did not join Israel but rebuilt Luz
– 1:27-35 for the half-victories of the northern tribes
– Gen.15:16; Deut.12:3; note Luke 11:24-26
3. Remorse is not repentance.
– 2:1-10; Israel weeps but does not change
– much can be lost very quickly (Gal.1:6)
