Peter Barnes | 1 John 2:1-2
SERMON NOTES
SIN AND THE BELIEVER
Jeremiah 23:1-8; 1 John 2:1-2
Calvin calls this ‘almost the whole gospel’.
1. We must desire holiness.
– 2:1; Calvin Coolidge: ‘He was agin it.’
– Lev.19:2 and Eph.2:8-9 together
2. We have a righteous advocate in Jesus Christ.
– 2:1; Jesus and the Holy Spirit are both Paracletes (John 14:16); a Paraclete is an advocate
– Christ is the righteous advocate, with no sin (1 John 3:5)
– Rom.8:33-34
3. Christ is the propitiation for the sins of all His people.
– 2:2; propitiation means that anger is appeased and justice is satisfied. God’s love is not won because His love comes first (4:10), but He pays the penalty for sin through the person of His Son.
– the whole world is not saved but the Christian world consists of Jews and Gentiles who trust in Christ alone.
