CONFESSING SIN
Psalm 14; 1 John 1:8-10
John Stott: ‘It is possible to be both too lenient and too severe towards sin.’
1. We all have sin.
– 1:8; this probably refers to our sinful nature
– Ps.51:5; Rom.6:23
2. We have all sinned.
– 1:10; this probably refers to our actions
– Ps.14:2-3; Eccles.7:20; Rom.3:23
– in 1775 Augustus Toplady worked out that an eighty year old man would have sinned 2,522,880,000 times in his life!
3. We need to confess our sin.
– 1:9; Prov.28:13; to confess is ‘to say the same word’, to agree with God against ourselves
– God is faithful to His promises (e.g. Ps.130:3-4, 7) and He is just (see Rom.3:25-26)
Calvin: ‘otherwise we shall always carry a hell within us’.
