Peter Barnes | Ephesians 4:7-10
SERMON NOTES
GRACIOUS GIFTS FROM CHRIST
(Ephesians 4:7-10)
– unity in faith and love (4:1-6), diversity in gifts (4:7-16)
1. Each Christian has been given a gift by Christ.
– 4:7; from the Spirit in 1 Cor.12:11; from God in Rom.12:3
– no vestigial organs in the body of Christ
2. Christ’s victory has exalted Him to the highest place.
– 4:8-10; does not go from verse 7 to verse 11
– applies Psalm 68 which is about God ascending to Zion to receive gifts to Christ, who must be divine (like Psalm 102:25-27 and Heb.1:10-12)
– Paul is not simply citing Scripture but explaining it (as in 5:14); maybe Numbers 18:6
– ascent after descent (John 3:13; 6:38; 8:23; 16:28)
3. Christians serve the one who fills all things.
– 4:10; Calvin says Christ has his foot upon their throat.
– sin, Satan, and death crushed.
