Peter Barnes | Psalm 121
SERMON NOTES
The Lord Preserves His Own
Psalm 121; 1 Pet. 1:1-12
Psalms 120-134 are the Songs of Ascents. The word ‘keep’ or ‘watch’ or ‘preserve’ is found six times in Psalm 121. William Romaine is supposed to have read it every day.
1. Our need for help.
– v.1 – the hills as Zion (Ps.125:2) or more generally (Ps.11:1)
2. The Creator is our helper.
– v.2; Isa.40:28. R. C. Sproul: there is not ‘one maverick molecule’ in the cosmos.
3. God’s help to His people.
– vv.3-8
(a) at all times (vv.3-4); Matt.26:36-43; 1 Kings 18:27; Ps.3:5-6
(b) in every situation (vv.5-6); no horoscopes
(c) for evermore (vv.7-8); David Livingstone in 1840 read Psalms 121 and 135. See 2 Kings 4 for Elisha.
– Fits in even with this week’s tragic fires in Victoria.
