The Parable of the Prodigal Son
2 Chronicles 33:1-17; Luke 15:11-32
Dostoevsky, dying in 1881, wanted it read to his children.
1. The wild sinner repents.
– 15:11-13, 30, 14-16; a Jew in a pigsty! (Lev.11:7)
– sin promises pleasure and delivers misery
15:15-17; Ps.84:10; he repents (Ps.51:3-4; Luke 18:13)
– ancient letter from a son to his mother
2. The self-righteous sinner pouts.
– 15:25-30, 31-32; I have heard church people say that the elder brother received a raw deal.
3. The Father shows grace.
– John 6:37; Luke 15:7, 10, 20-24; Ps.103:12-13; Jer.31:34; Micah 7:19
The past shall be forgotten,
A present joy be given,
A future grace be promised,
A glorious crown in heaven..
