Hearing Gladly Yet Hostile
Jeremiah 38:1-28; Mark 6:14-29
Herod Antipas divorced his wife to marry the wife of his half-brother Philip.
1. Herod recognised that John was righteous.
– 6:19-20
– the Kremlin feared Solzhenitsyn
2. Herod is moved by John’s preaching.
– 6:20; see Matt.3:1-2, 7-12
– like Benjamin Franklin listening to George Whitefield, and David Hume listening to John Brown of Haddington
3. Herod capitulates in the end.
– 6:21-29; he becomes like Macbeth (see 6:14-16), then is hardened (Luke 23:8-12).
– Wilberforce wrote of his unconverted years in the British House of Commons: ‘The first years I was in Parliament I did nothing – nothing that is to any purpose. My own distinction was my darling object.’
