Peter Barnes | Luke 17:20-37
SERMON NOTES
The Kingdom will Come
Psalm 37:1-17, 34-40; Luke 17:20-37
– two stages to the coming of the kingdom; ‘when?’ in v.20; ‘where?’ in v.37
1. God’s kingdom has come in lowliness.
– 17:20-21 – probably ‘in the midst of you’ rather than ‘within you’; note Luke 11:20
– Son’s kingdom (Dan.2:44) comes via suffering (Luke 17:25)
2. This kingdom will be consummated suddenly in judgment.
– 17:24-37; 1 Cor.15:51-52; Luke 17:37 – once judgment has taken place, that is it
3. Jesus warns against worldliness.
– 17:26-30 – surprising omission of violence, corruption and homosexuality (Gen.6:5, 11-12; 18:20; 19:4-5; Ezek.16:49-50); ‘business as usual’; woman wanted $3000 p.a. to spend on dog grooming; Arthur Stace: ‘Eternity’
Charles Spurgeon: ‘Lord, by Thy good Spirit, keep me ever in mind of that great day of days, which will make eternity bright with immeasurable bliss, or dark with unutterable woe! May I look at everything in the blaze of light which surrounds Thy judgment seat!’
