Peter Barnes | Isaiah 61:1-3
SERMON NOTES
The Year of God’s Favour
(Isa. 61:1-3)
Barry Webb and Allan Harman call this the fifth Servant Song. Jesus says it is fulfilled in Him (Luke 4:21) – contrast to John Alexander Dowie who thought he was Elijah III.
1. Here is the Spirit-anointed Servant.
– 61:1 – in the first person (see Isa.11:1-2; 42:1)
– compare with 2 Cor.4:5
2. The Servant will have a ministry of comfort.
– 61:1-3; nine infinitives; see Lev.25:8-10, 17 for the Year of Jubilee (every fifty years)
– Col.1:13
3. Christ offers us salvation before judgment.
– 61:2 has ‘day of vengeance’ which is missing when Jesus cites this passage in Luke 4:18-19
– note John 3:17; 12:47; not contradictory to John 5:22-29; 9:39; day of vengeance is after grace is refused
– Acts 13:46
