Proclaiming the Gospel: A Narrow Gate and a Narrow Way

Peter Barnes | Matthew 7:13, 14

SERMON  NOTES
The  Narrow  Gate  and  the  Narrow  Way
Deut.30:11-20;  Matt.7 13-14, 21-29

– two  ways  in  Deut.30:19;  Ps.1:6;  Jer.21:8

1. There  are  two  gates.

– ‘strait’  means  ‘narrow’;  the  text  says  nothing  about  ‘the  straight  and  narrow’

– John 10:7, 9;  Matt.16:24;  wide  entrance  e.g. 1 Sam.16:14, 23

2. There  are  two  ways.

– John 14:6;  may  be  troublesome  (Acts 14:21-22)

– Ex.23:2;  Rom.12:2;  1 Pet.4:3-5

3. There  are  two  kinds  of  companions.

– Matt.22:14,  but  many  overall  e.g.  Matt.8:11;  Rev.7:9-10

– Robert  Steel’s  plaque  to  John  Geddie:  ‘When  he  landed  in  1848  there  were  no  Christians  here,  and  when  he  left  in  1872  there  were  no  heathens.’

4.  There  are  two  destinies.

– Matt.25:34, 41  (Stott:  ‘the  suicide  road’)

– Luke 12:32
