Peter Barnes | Isaiah 53:5-6
SERMON NOTES
The Servant Bears our Iniquities
(Isa. 53:5-6)
– James Durham preached 72 sermons on Isaiah 53! He called verse 5 sad and sweet.
1. The Servant suffered savage treatment.
– 53:1-5
2. We have ruined ourselves by our sins.
– transgressions indicate willful rebellion; iniquities indicate perversion (‘bend double’ says Alec Motyer)
– like sheep (Ex.23:2a); all of us – hence Acts 17:30; Rom.3:9-10
3. The Servant’s work of satisfaction and substitution.
– John Huss’ death in 1415 inspires us, but the Servant’s death is substitutionary

John Stott: ‘Man asserts himself against God and puts himself where only God deserves to be; God sacrifices himself and puts himself where only man deserves to be.’
