Sermons on the Servant Songs of Isaiah: The Servant’s Work

Peter Barnes | Isaiah 52:13-15

SERMON NOTES
The Servant’s Work in Summary
(Isaiah 52:13-15)

– Barry Webb: ‘the jewel in the crown of Isaiah’s theology’

1. The divine exaltation of the Servant.

– 52:13; usually applied to God (see Isa.6:1; 33:10; 57:15)

– Acts 2:33; Phil.2:9-11

2. The brutal degradation of the Servant.

– 52:14; disfigured or marred in Malachi 1:14

– John 13:3-5, 12-14

– Ps. 22:6

3. The priestly ministry of the Servant.

– 52:15; RSV has ‘startle’ but it is ‘sprinkle’ with blood (Lev.4:6; 14:7) or oil (Lev.8:10-11) or water (Num.8:6-7)

– 1 Peter 1:1-2; the king is priest

– missionary impulse in Rom.15:20-21

The exalted one became abased that we might be cleansed.
